This year’s focus is on helping people to check for atrial fibrillation, which lots of people live with. Atrial fibrillation is when your heart beats with an irregular rhythm, which could lead to a stroke.

Healthwatch Thurrock are shining a light on stories from members of the Thurrock Stroke project group who they visited earlier this week.
Today we hear from Karen;
“I had my stroke at a party in 2014 – so ten years ago now. At first I thought it was my epilepsy, but when I saw my neighbour, the first thing they said was ‘I think you have had a stroke’. My face was dropped on one side and I had slurred speech. I wish people said you could have one of these or more, not all of them as I didn’t have all the signs and symptoms”. – Karen

For this year’s Stroke prevention day, we’re shining a light on stories from Today we hear from Graham;
“I was at work wiping the whiteboard and I remember thinking, the fumes from these pens are really strong. I then started to stumble along the corridor into my colleague’s office who instantly knew I was having a stroke as his mum had had one, he called an ambulance and they were there within 4 minutes. This was in the July. The following January I tried to go back to work but was made redundant. I went to my GP who said I should never have gone back to work as I was too ill. This was a shock to me as I really enjoyed my job and I liked working” – Graham
